THE AUDIT ALE FEAST

HELD AT THE FAT CAT 24 SEPTEMBER 2009

Feasts were often held to celebrate the presentation of a set of annual accounts, then known as an Audit. The Cutler's Feast in Sheffield that was first held in 1625 was for this purpose as were the feasts held in Cambridge and Oxford Colleges. Some of these feasts dated back to the thirteenth century. The university colleges that had their own breweries usually brewed a strong beer to be presented at the feast and these were sometimes called Audit Ales. As the university breweries closed during the last century commercial breweries were called upon to brew the audit ales for the feasts.
Reading the history of the feasts and the ales Dave Wickett, who has connections with both Sheffield Universities, thought it would be a good idea to revive the concept of the Audit Feast and of the Audit Ale.
The first such feast was held at The Fat Cat on September 24th 2009 and along with a number of beers, the feast concluded with a Yorkshire Cheese board and a 10.7% Special Audit Ale. A one third glass was drunk by all diners, a pin went on sale at the bar and all the Feast participants were given one of the limited edition bottles.
Attending the feast were 8 from The University of Sheffield, 8 from Kelham Island Brewery and 8 guests including The Master Cutler, The Deputy Lord Mayor, The Rt Honourable Richard Caborn MP, Andy Cullen the Sheffield Camra Chairman and Tim Hampson

THE FLOOD

25th June 2007

Monday 25th June started much like any other day. It rained all day, and it was hard rain, but nobody sensed that it was going to be anything other than a wet day.

At around 2pm one of the staff said that the River Don appeared to be high. By 2.30 it was clearly rising fast. Around 3.30 water started to fill the car park and it rose at an alarming rate. Three of us worked trying to fill bags with sand. At first it lapped around our ankles within fifteen minutes it was up to our knees. At that point I got all of the staff to leave the premises. At 4.45pm the River Don burst its banks and a wave swept down the street. I just managed to get my car away, later on it would have been totally submerged.

Both The Fat Cat and the Kelham Island Brewery had extensive flooding.

Remarkably the flood waters had gone by the following morning. We were left with a six inch layer of contaminated, stinking sludge which is proving very difficult to remove.

.

Cleaning out the cellar of The Fat Cat on Wednesday we had numerous helpers and well-wishers including the Professor of Human Resources from the University of Sheffield. He remarked that it made a change from the work he should have been doing. One of the buckets of sludge he lifted out from the cellar contained a live fish. We’ve kept him and called him nemo. He deserved to escape.

Soon we were inundated with reporters. Radio 4 and Radio 5 did live broadcasts form the brewery and I was pleased to see that on the Wednesday BBC TV News covered Tony Blair leaving Downing Street followed by the flood at the brewery including an interview with the brewer. BBC news 24 carried it every hour. The BBC obviously thought that the loss of 40,000 pints of beer was almost a big a story as the loss of a Prime Minister!

Stuart, who names our guests beers in the brewery and who is a massive Springsteen fan has already decided our first brew at the brewery when we are back will be named after a Springsteen song “After The Flood”

Attached are some photos taken when it was still possible to walk around.

The Brewery has started brewing again on Monday 2nd July and The Fat Cat is opening on the same day at 6pm
