The Fat
Cat introduced to Sheffield the concept of a constantly changing range
of guest beers, and this is still the philosophy of the pub. It offers
10 traditional draught Real Ales which will always include at least
4 from our own Kelham Island Brewery as well as the famous Timothy
Taylors Landlord (Voted Best Beer at The Great British Beer Festival
1999). The other pumps are devoted to guest beers from across the
country, especially from micro-breweries. The number of different
beers sold to date is 4504 (for the full list see Pub/Beer History).
Beers
from the Kelham Island Brewery include:
Kelham
Island Bitter (ABV 3.8%)
Straw coloured, classically English, bitter beer brewed from a no-nonsense
recipe of Maris Otter malted barley with a small addition of crystal
malt. Kelham Island Bitter is a dry beer with plenty of both bitterness
and flavour from the Mount Hood hops.
Sheffield
Best Bitter (ABV 4.0%)
Chestnut coloured Yorkshire bitter. It has a refreshingly dry palate
with a lingering bitterness provided by the dwarf hop, First Gold.
Colour and flavour are provided by crystal rye which gives a pleasant
biscuity character.
Pale
Rider (ABV 5.2%)
Originally brewed in 1993 as a Spring special, Pale Rider rapidly
became the brewery's biggest selling beer. Brewed from a combination
of British and continental malts and a mixture of hops Pale Rider
has a honeyed flavour, a powerful aroma and a dangerously deceptive
drinkability.
Easy
Rider (ABV 4.3%)
Easy Rider is a smooth easier drinking version of our infamous Pale
Rider. It is brewed with a blend of floor malted Maris Otter barley
and spring wheat to provide a clean fruity palate. Willamette hops
from America's Yakima Valley are used to provide both bitterness and
a pleasant floral bouquet.
Wheat
Bier (ABV 5.0%)
Based on the style of Bavarian Weizenbiers, Kelham Island Wheat Bier
is brewed from a grist of Wheat Malt and Maris Otter. Smooth and very
drinkable, the flavour is dominated by fruit flavours from the wheat
and the subtle but distinctive aroma from the continental hops.
Bête
Noire (ABV 5.5%)
First brewed in 1992 as a Winter special, Bête Noire is a black
beer brewed from Maris Otter malted barley with additions of crystal
malt and chocolate malt to give flavouring and colour. Bête
Noire has a rich, warming full bodied flavour with hints of fruit
and chocolate.
Grande Pale (ABV 6.6%)
A seriously strong pale ale brewed with a blend of 3 varieties of
English hops and floor malted barley with a deceptively easy drinking
character and has been nicknamed Grand Impaler.
